Deaths:
SHA‘28 - Armella Lebold Nash •
SHA ‘37- Bernard I. Koehler November 11, 1919 –
February 29, 2008 -Bernard was a veteran, who served in World War II as a
Sergeant. He operated an electrical contracting business in Salem, Koehler and
Monner Electric, for the majority of his career. •
SHA ‘42 - George Renner November 10, 1924 – May
6, 2009- George served with the US Navy Seebees during WWII from 1942-46
then married Dolores Muller in September 1946. He graduated from Willamette
University. He was dedicated to his career with the State of Oregon, Secretary
of State’s office serving from 1952 until retiring in 1985 as Supervisor of the
Division of Audits. • SHA’46 -
Oscar Christensen died August 22, 2008 •
SHA’46 - Caroline Tuttle died February 22, 2008 •
SHA ‘46 - Charles "Bob" Schnider July 27, 1928 –
January 2010- Bob meet his wife, Angela Kropp, at Sacred Heart
Academy. They were married for 48 years (Angela passed away in 1998). Bob’s
career was with US Bank. •
SHA ‘49 - Jacqueline Ann (Zerzan) Vincent July 15, 1931 –
November 18, 2009 - Following high school, Jackie graduated from Marylhurst
College, majoring in art. Jackie used her artistic talents through her work at
Sears in downtown Salem creating window displays and with the Salem-Keizer
School District where she was an illustrator of educational games. •
SHA ‘50 - Gerald (Jerry) Weger May 22, 1932 –
March 19, 2010 - Jerry served in the Army during the Korean War. He retired
from Pacific Northwest Bell in 1986 with 36 years of service. •

John Hoy died July 12, 2009. John was a Blanchet
grandfather to students Maddie and Alex. • SHA‘53 -Jim Rodewald •
SHA ‘55 - Peter Fredric Meyer March 19, 1936 –
August 14, 2008 - Peter worked for companies operated by Merritt W. Truax
for more than 50 years. He retired in 2002 as the executive vice president and
chief operating officer of State Investments, LLC. •
SHA ‘55 - Richard Keith Schmidt February 21,
1937 – January 8, 2008 - Keith joined the US Air Force after high school
where he became an air traffic controller. Following military service, he went
to work with the Federal Aviation Agency after which he was a partner with Mary
Jane Bakery of Portland, followed by employment with Tacoma Screw in Portland.

Sue Ann Watson Evenhees died January 3, 2008. •
Serra ‘58 - Cornelius "Cork" Lambert Feskens
August 23, 1940 - January 4, 2010 - Cork was a speech therapist who worked
for many years for the Southern Oregon Education Service District, retiring as
Director of Special Education. • Serra‘58 -
Dan Ritter died on October 11, 2008 in Sun River, Oregon. •
Serra ‘59 Doug Thompson June 25, 1941 - March
24, 2010. Doug’s passion in high school was football. He received his
medical degree from OHSU, served in Vietnam Army Medical Corps, married his
wife, Candy in 1966, and retired from the Army in 1973, He continued with an
illustrious career, founding the Pain Clinic at SW Washington Medical Center.

SHA ‘60 - Donna Marie Strauch November 24,
1942 – November 21, 2008 - Donna earned a Master’s Degree in music from
Marylhurst College. She enjoyed playing the cello and was an accomplished
pianist. •
SHA ’60 Classmate - Beverly Ann Kelley April 17, 1942 – March
23, 2009 - Beverly attended Sacred Heart High School for the first two years
of high school where she was a cheerleader. She graduated from St. Boniface in
Sublimity. Beverly worked for State Farm for 30 years.

‘60 - Margaret A. Winter November 11, 1941 – March 19, 2009 -
Margaret worked at the Oregon Department of Revenue for 36 years, retiring in
2001. She married Arthur in 1968 and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Serra ’61 Classmate - Philip G. Gruchella – May
2, 1943 – March 31, 2010 - Phil graduated from North Salem High School and
OSU and worked in the insurance business. • Serra‘62 - Michael John Kolb passed
away December 18, 2008 in Sun City, California. He was an educator and avid
golfer. Mike was the father of 5 and grandfather of 4. • Serra‘62 -
David Nelke died on January 27, 2009. David’s career was in high tech and
recently he received his BS Business Management. He was the father of 2 and
grandfather of 5. •
Serra ‘62 - Steve Boyd Panther died September
24, 2006. He was a track star in high school and won numerous trophies in
marksmanship as a member of the Junior National Rifle Association. Steve’s
career was in the printing business. • Serra ’62 -
Willette Marie Sutter died October
23, 2009 in Gresham, Oregon. • Serra‘68 - Michael Nelke, died October 4,
2007. Mike was degreed and founded one of the first CB radio operations in the
area, staying in that business for most of his career. He was an avid golfer,
father of one and grandfather of 4.
• SHA‘68 - Bernadette “Bernie” (Kreft) Trefethen died August 21,
2009 in her home in Salem with her husband, Terry, by her side. Bernie was the
daughter of Mary (Kreft) Zenger from the SHA Class of ‘46, still living in
Salem.

SHA ‘78 - Edward Bruce Callicrate February 4, 1960 – March 8, 2009 -
Eddie worked for Legacy Health System in laboratory services in Portland.
• '69 - Janis
Annette Kleinschmit-Husky - September 14, 1950 – June 27, 2009 - Jan
worked for Fairview Training Center and then entered the field of corrections
where she worked as a Correctional Corporal for ten years until retiring in

Announcements:
SHA‘68 - Donna (Parton) Garaventa was
awarded the Blanchet’s President’s Award recently. Donna has been an active
member of the Board for many years and is very active in the local community. We
wrote about her in our December, 2008 newsletter.

SHA ‘52 - Kelly Gill Holland
(maiden name was Dolores Gohfried) recently published “Poetry,” a book of poetry
available on Amazon.com and on Borders.com. She also has a new art show. Here
are few of Kelly’s poems:

Congratulations, Kelly!
Serra’s ‘69 - Randy Charles Epping who attended Serra from 1966 to
1969 when it closed and where he was the last class president, is an
internationally renowned author and speaker. He just released his new book,
"Fusion Economics."
Based in Zurich, Switzerland and São Paulo, Brazil, Randy has
worked in International Finance for over 25 years, holding management positions
in European and American investment banks in London, Geneva, and Zurich. He has
a master’s degree in International Relations from Yale University, along with
degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Paris-Sorbonne.
He is currently the manager of IFS Project Management AG, a Switzerland-based
international consulting company. In addition to several books and articles on
the world economy, including "The 21st Century Economy—A Beginner’s Guide"
published by Vintage Books/Random House in May 2009, he has written a novel,
"Trust", a financial thriller based in Zurich and Budapest. Find out more about

PAST NEWS:
A Gathering of SHA and Serra Catholic alumni
joined us for a special performance of "Music Man" presented
at Blanchet this past May.
Tim Pickett, LASC Chair and Charles Lee, Blanchet President
welcomed all. Also attending from the LASC were Bob Saalfeld and Elaine
(Nelke) Swyt with their spouses.
'The Gathering' - Saturday, August 9, 2008
Blanchet welcomed nearly 300
alumni, spouses, classmates and friends of Sacred Heart and Serra Catholic to
'The Gathering.' Guests traveled from as far as New York to attend the reunion,
renew friendships and relive old memories. Armella Lebold Nash, Sacred Heart
class of ’29, was recognized as representing the earliest graduating class at
the reunion.

Proceeds from ‘The Gathering’ were used to fund
a new trophy case to house a large collection of trophies, yearbooks, photos and
other memorabilia from each school. The trophy case is located in the lobby of
Blanchet Catholic School and stands as a permanent tribute to the students of
Sacred Heart Academy and Serra Catholic School.
