SAT and ACT Testing
Most college admission offices use standardized test scores to help them make admission decisions. The importance of these exams varies by institution, but at NO college is a standardized test score the determining factor in gaining admission.

The tests that are available are:

SAT I – Designed to measure academic aptitude in verbal and mathematic reasoning. An essay-writing test is to be added in the near future. 50% verbal; 50% mathematics

ACT – Designed to measure academic achievement in English, mathematics, reading and science reasoning.

SAT II – Individual subject area tests. Available in history, math, English, science and foreign language. Used by highly selective colleges, these are sometimes required, sometimes optional.

Which test should I take?
Since nearly all colleges accept either the ACT or the SAT I, students may take either or both of these tests. It is a good idea to determine which test is better suited for you by taking practice tests. The practice tests are available in the counseling center or online at www.collegeboard.com or at www.ACT.org. Mr. Prinslow can answer most questions regarding these exams.

When should I take the tests?
All student should take the SAT I or ACT test in May or June of their junior year. Based on your score, you may be advised to repeat the tests in October or November of your senior year. Students considering highly selective colleges and California state schools should take a SAT II subject test immediately following completion of the subject. Check the college’s website, the Peterson’s college guidebook or talk to the counseling center for test requirements of individual colleges.

What are the dates for next year’s test and how do I sign up?
The testing calendar and registration materials are available in the counseling center. You may also obtain this information at www.collegeboard.com for the SAT I or at www.ACT.org for the ACT.

PSAT/NMSQT Testing
This year’s PSAT/NMSQT test date is Wednesday, October 18. All sophomores and juniors will take the test on the nationally scheduled day.

What is the PSAT/NMSQT?
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test is an opportunity to practice for the SAT I. The emphasis is truly on practice. The scores are not reported or in any way affect college admission. Approximately 5% of the test takers nationwide may qualify as National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists based on their eleventh grade PSAT scores. Blanchet students take the PSAT twice, which gives them a good preview of the SAT I.

How can I get ready for the PSAT?
Through the counseling center, students will receive the PSAT Student Bulletin, which contains a full-length practice test. Each student receives only one bulletin. Getting a good night’s sleep and eating a good breakfast prior to the test are two very important things you can do to prepare.

When will I know my results?
Your score report will be given to you by the counseling center in mid-December. Your test booklet can be returned to you to use as you review your score report.
