Basketball Teams to Play for 4th Place in State Championships

On Wednesday the Cavalier varsity basketball teams headed to Coos Bay to represent Blanchet in the OSAA 3A State Championships. The girls took on the Valiants of Valley Catholic and the boys played Horizon Christian in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.  Both teams came up short and advanced to the consolation bracket where they found success taking on Nyssa and Cascade Christian. They will play for 4th place on Saturday, March 3 at Marshfield High School. The girls will play Salem Academy at 9:00 a.m. and the boys will take on Valley Catholic at 10:45 a.m. Tickets are available at the door at a cost of $8 for adults and $5 for students. For more information visit the OSAA Basketball page. The Lady Cavs fought hard against Valley Catholic but were outscored 11 points at the half.  They battled back with a surge in the 4th quarter when the Cavs outscored their opponent 12-5, but it was not enough to put them on top. The final score (42-49) bumped the Cavaliers out of the semifinal game. They advanced to the consolation bracket on the second day of competition. Junior Sami Belleque led in scoring for Blanchet with 10 points followed by senior Bianca Russell with 8. Other scorers included: Lauren Kessel (7), Sarah Darst and Tori Hittner (6), Emily Copple (4), and Caitlyn Buswell (1).

Blanchet was matched with Nyssa for the first round of the consolation bracket playoffs. The Cavaliers outscored the Bulldogs every quarter but the 4th when they tried to make a run.  Sami Belleque continued to lead the team in scoring with 14 points overall. Second to Belleque was junior Emily Copple with 8 points. The girls shot 43.9% from the field and 64.7% from the line. Other scorers included: Lauren Kessel (7), Caitlyn Buswell (6), Bianca Russell (5), Tori Hittner (4), Sarah Darst (3), and Bretton Ostby (3). They ousted the Bulldogs with a final score of 50-31 and secured themselves an OSAA trophy. The team will take on Salem Academy for 4th place at Marshfield High School at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.


The boys team took on Horizon Christian in the quarterfinals and lead 25-18 at the half.  The Hawks came back with a strong surge in the second half to finish the game with a win.  The Cavs lost by one basket with a final score of 43-45. Lead scorers for Blanchet were Brent Counts with 28 points followed by Will Bizon with 4. Other scorers included: Patrick Counts (3), Kyle Ruiz (3), Trevor Howard (3), and Trey Gianella (2). The team shot 41.7% from the field and 63.2% from the line. They advanced to the consolation bracket.

On Friday, the Cavaliers took on Cascade Christian in the first round of the consolation bracket. They led by 5 at the half and opened the gap to 20 in the third quarter. However, Cascade Christian fought back outscoring Blanchet 25-11 in the fourth quarter. Coach Tromblay's boys held their lead at the end with a final score of 66-60. Top scorers were Brent Counts with 23 points and his brother Patrick Counts with 11. Other Blanchet scorers were Will Bizon (10), Trevor Howard (7), Kyle Ruiz (6), Jackson Smith (4), Michael Anderson (3), Trey Gianella (1), and Dan Smith (1). The boys will take on Valley Catholic at Marshfield High School at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday for the 4th place trophy.
