Sparrow Clubs USA
is a national non-profit organization of school-based clubs that assist
children in medical crisis. Blanchet’s adopted ‘sparrow’ is junior Lauren
Tolento who was seriously injured in a car accident in November.
Inspired by Lauren's journey,
we planned a week of activities designed to raise awareness
about issues impacting our school community and to inspire positive change
on campus.
Life’s a Gift kicked off on Sunday, April 20 with a concert, benefit
lunch, variety show and a silent auction. Musical entertainment was provided
by Julie Hoy, Blanchet students and the Severin Sisters. All profits
benefited the Sparrow Club. “My favorite part was Mrs. Hoy’s song ‘The
Catholic School Blues,’” said seventh grader Sarah Duncan. Seventh graders
Mariah Wyatt and Elizabeth Grainey agreed that their favorite part of the
event was when President Lee played the spoons to this original song.
Each following day during the week featured an assembly and guest speaker. Topics included peer pressure, friendship, driving safety and service to others.
Several activities were also planned in honor of this special week. McTeacher Night took place on Wednesday, April 23 at the Lancaster and D Street McDonalds. Blanchet teachers and staff worked at the restaurant with 50% of the proceeds benefiting the Sparrow Club.

Thirteen students took a service field trip to the Ronald McDonald House in Portland on Thursday, April 24. These students donated their time to help with yard work around the house.
